Interesting news. Whispergen Ltd. has been doing trial runs in various EU countries for a few years now, and their latest target is Germany, where 20 homes are being rigged with CHP AC units. Already available in the UK, they run off mains natural gas or bottled LPG, and can generate up to 1kW of power. There's a standalone DC variant that's rated for 800W, fixed or portable.

The full press release can be read here.

One question comes to mind though. Why are they doing trials in every individual country? Isn't cutting down on this sort of paperwork part of the reason the EU was formed in the first place?

And why can't I buy one in Australia yet?

well if makes you feel any better i can't get them here either. well, maybe i could, i don't know, but i sure as shit can't afford one, i reckon, so it's a moot point.

as for the law, you're from a commonwealth country so i'd certainly defer to you on issues of EU law. i assume they are driven by some sort of logistical model that is over our heads. it's probably something to do with statistical sampling or something to project scenarios for large-scale distribution. but what do i know!

still pretty cool though. too bad it's all just the sort of brushed-stainless-steel shit that upper class fancy types buy to make themselves feel important. i'll be happy when i start seeing them in wal-mart. i mean, you know, paul allen owns a spaceship, but that doesn't help me very much. i'm definitely happier to see this consumer-end crap than the supply-side bullshit of SES and their ilk, though.
